Before Nema started work, less than 1% of children went on to study at secondary school, less than 20% completed all 7 years of primary school and adult literacy rates were 25% for men and 15% for women. The underlying reason being the prohibitive cost and need for children to gather food.
PROJECT: School Feeding
In 2006 80 children regularly attended Guludo Primary School, in 2007 264 and now in 2008 303 children. This increase is largely due to the start of a school feeding project where each child receives a nutritious meal providing 80% of the child’s needs for the day. The project has continued into 2008 with Guludo and we are currently starting new feeding projects in 2 more primary schools. (Funded by Global Angels)
PROJECT: Education Scholarships
In 2007 6 students received full scholarships to attend secondary school, and this year 49. Fund allowing we would like to continue supporting our current scholars and support another 50 in 2009.
PROJECT: Construction of Primary Schools
We are currently building a primary school in Guludo village (funded by guests who have stayed at Guludo Beach Lodge) and in Ningaia village (funded by Jojo Maman Bebe).
PROJECT: School Farms
We are currently helping Guludo and Ningaia to establish school farms to teach improved agricultural techniques and provide nutritious food for the children. (Funded by Global Angels and GKN).
